Our History
Our Washington, DC affiliate was founded by a local group of women and men, some of whom had been active in the national organization, including a former Girls Inc. national Board Chair and a former national Policy Coordinator. The Washington affiliate received its 501(c)3 designation in 2004 and began serving middle school girls in Washington, DC in 2006, with an emphasis on Wards 1, 5, 7 and 8.

During our first three years of operation, we focused on building capacity and infrastructure, gaining resources and community support, and developing partnerships with community organizations such as the DC Public and Public Charter schools, the Department of Parks and Recreation, and other mission-aligned community-based organizations, delivering our programs in various organizations’ facilities.

In 2010, as part of our plan to deepen our focus on preparing middle school and high school girls for higher education, we opened a center directly on the campus of Howard University. This generous In-kind gift from the University is a welcoming 5,000 sq ft. environment with a 15 station computer lab, multi-purpose space suitable for fitness activities, arts – including a stage, reading area, kitchen, self-contained classroom, office and waiting area.

Now at this site, College Bound Girls! and the Girls Inc. Experience brings mentoring, academic support, college preparation, enrichment activities, leadership development and the research-based Girls Inc. national programs that encourage every girl to dream big dreams and develop the skills she needs to make those dreams come true!
College Bound Girls! offers programs (1) During the school year, Monday -Friday 3-6 pm (2) Summer Camp (3) Periodic weekend/special activities.

We are fully dependent on donations, in-kind contributions and grants. Our Board of Directors approves an annual budget and a strategic plan guides our direction, which includes a diversified fund development plan. We complete an annual audit. The latest audit can be found on where we have a silver rating.
