About Us
There is no question that the strength of our organization lies in the passion of its people. Our Board – comprised of both men and women – has the advantage of tapping into an extraordinary female presence in the Washington, DC area.
The current Board of Directors has spent countless hours reaching out to the community to develop partnerships for providing programs and for facilities. And they have succeeded. We are fortunate to have considerable talent in our area familiar with Girls Inc. programs, including a number of Girls Inc. program alumni and scholars, current and former national Board members, and national Board officers and members. In particular, Girls Inc.WDCMA has two Board members with significant national Girls Inc. experience; a former national Board chair – Roselyn Epps, MD – and a former national policy director – Mildred Kiefer Wurf. These two outstanding individuals together with the other highly accomplished members of the original steering committee and current board, have provided invaluable and efficient guidance to our affiliate.
Girls Inc. of WDCMA has three other key strengths:
1) A successful, strong national parent organization with outstanding programs and a Research and Training Center in Indianapolis, Indiana, containing one of the largest collections of girl research in the country.
2) Programs that have specific goals and objectives and align with learning standards and benchmarks that are commonly used nationwide.
3) An intentional and compensatory commitment to work with girls. This focus is our distinctive competence, a quality we believe is both needed and valued by our local communities and supporters, as well as by parents and girls.
