Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Girls Inc.’s mission?
A: To inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold.
Q: Why just girls?
A: There is still a wide gap between what women and men earn. Women earn 76% of a man’s salary in the same job with the same educational background. To close this gap girls must conquer social, legal and cultural barriers that are different than those faced by boys. By providing space and programming that is targeted specifically to girls, their needs and their challenges, Girls Inc. is able to prepare girls to be on the same playing field as boys and to help close this unfair gap.
Q: What kind of programs are available for girls?
A: Girls Incorporated’s workshops and National Identity Programs address topics like Careers and Life Planning, Health and Sexuality, Leadership and Community Action, Sports and Adventure, Self-Reliance and Life Skills, and Culture + Heritage, as well as Math, Science and Technology. Girls Inc. staff are available to address topics related to girls' needs and single gender programming.
Q: In what capacity does Girls Inc. use volunteers?
A: Girls Inc. WDCMA uses trained volunteers to help deliver programming. Many assist with outreach tasks such as special events and mailings. Volunteers may also serve on select board committees, such as Communications and Fund Development.
Q: Where are Girls Inc. programs and services offered?
A: Girls Inc. WDCMA currently delivers programs in the District of Columbia in two locations: the Trinidad Recreation Center in Ward 5 and the Ft. Davis Community Center in Ward 7. Girls Inc. will also begin programming in Ward 1 at our new Girls Inc. Center on Howard University’s campus in September 2009. We also sponsor events and workshops that are open to all DC girls. As resources allow, we will expand to surrounding Maryland and Virginia counties.
Q: What age girls do you serve?
A: Girls Inc. National Programs are developed for girls between the ages of six and eighteen. Currently, Girls Inc. WDCMA is delivering programs to middle school girls with plans to expand to other age groups.
Q: How much does your program cost?
A: There is currently no cost for Girls Inc. out of school time programming. There may be an occassional fee to cover the cost of some workshops.
Q: How can I donate or be involved?
A: We would love to hear from you and there are many ways you can help support girls!
